How to Pick A Headstone

Picking a headstone to memorialize one’s life is more important than you think. Whether you’re choosing one for yourself or for a loved one, picking a headstone can be a great step in the grieving process to help you honor your loved one. Though you definitely want to choose something that you/your loved one would love and reflects their personal taste, you also want a headstone that will be classic and timeless.

There are many elements of a headstone for you to choose from that you’ll want to consider before you make a final purchase. While you should always read the rules and restrictions of the cemetery you’ve chosen, as well as stay in a comfortable budget, here are some tips to help you choose the perfect headstone:

  • Design. There are many headstone designs that you can choose from that you may not even be aware of! These options include flat markers (traditional, in-ground, lawn level markers), bevel markers (flat markers, with the top at an angle so it’s above ground), slant markers (upright with a slanted face), upright markers (out of ground, can be any shape, size, or sculpture), or a large ledger marker (a larger stone up to 8 inches thick that could cover more than 1 grave). You could also choose something like a bench memorial.

  • Material. Popular materials for headstones include marble, slate, granite, and bronze. Granite and bronze are typically chosen for their range of colors, easy maintenance, and great durability. Marble is typical of military headstones for their clean, white appearance, however, it can be hard to maintain as it’s a softer stone. Slate is also beautifully smooth and easy to carve into, but not picked as often, as it is notorious for not being extremely durable.

  • Inscription. Inscriptions and messages are often considered the most important part of the headstone, and you should take some time to think about what you want written on the headstone. You can choose just simple information, like name and dates, or short messages like “beloved mother and wife” or “rest in peace.” Some people choose poems, bible verses, or quotes. You can also choose to have symbols or designs engraved onto the headstone. In general, it’s better to do less than more.

  • Accents. If there’s extra money in your budget, you may consider adding extra accents to your headstone, like wreath holders, vases, picture frames, flower holders, and even photos. Military veterans can also have bronze medallions added to their gravestones.
